I'd like to weigh in on this whole "Not going to shows" thing." I don't go to many shows (Although I haven't been as stoked on a show as I was on Liferuiner in quite some time.) I have been going to shows for 15 years and would predict in that I may have seen close to a thousand shows (Maybe?) At this point, I just don't care about going out JUST to hear new bands. If I know a few good friends will be at an event, I'll swing by to give them hugs. But I'll usually leave within an hour unless there is a band I really want to see.
I still love the bands I love, and am super bummed work will prevent me from catching Guttermouth (Probably.) But am I a dick with ears because I don't want to see some unknown noise band in the basement of some dude I've never met's house? I don't think so.
Also, Counter Strike: Global Offensive is a lot of fun.

Ludwig you need to smoke more weed these days and chill the fuck out.
Sorry but it needed to be said. I still love you of course, but who the fuck cares what BKohl does... it has no bearing on what we do.

I just wanna chime in with my appreciation for all of the acts, including some of my favourites, who continue to get out onto the road with little or no guarantee, often going on a hope for certain stops in the itinerary, selling their wares that were often produced out-of-pocket, and remaining down to earth human doings. They're the kind of groups that make promoting easy.
There is no absolute DIY because we all need one another, but it is something that shouldn't be overlooked or reserved for punk rock underground pretension. Certain folks like the spectacle, big or medium, while others prefer the alternative, whatever that may be. Personally, I like to see folks get back to being minstrels, enticing one another just because. None of these tour busses or 5 tonne trucks devoted entirely to one band's light rigging.
I thought we were past that, in a post-grunge world. holy just post grunge world

I didn't set out to pick a fight, just after some of the more mean spirited mocking of him I thought he at least deserved to know why people get frustrated with him, and I've been particularly frustrated lately (mostly cause of shady behind the scenes booking things). I actually initially intended to attempt to bridge a gap or something. I do still think he is the pied piper of the death of punk/hardcore, but internet always makes me seem more riled up than I am! Jeff, come smoke some weed with me! www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5VT-ofxdh4

I'm sure old dudes in 1995 were really bummed about all the baggy-pants skaters in NOFX hoodies who packed Surreal shows while the local hc/Fugazi-worship cassette scene was still rocking basements and having a hard time getting people to shows.

Yes, this is what I meant by "this isn't anything new." After talking about this more with Dylan L it kinda became clear that this is only an issue because this city is small and the scene is small. In bigger cities these scene coexist and no fucks are given. But it would be cool if the kids who went to BKohls shows were also aware of the more DIY punk scene, and hopefully their understanding of local shows and punk/hardcore music isn't solely based on what BKohl does.

As a highschooler, I know for a fact that kids my age who attend bkohl type shows think that is as underground as music gets. I know a few people in that Septic Paste band and they are stoked as fuck that they will be opening the Abandon All Ships show (which is cool for them, but you know...). And unfortunately, sideways haircut bands like that are what they view as hardcore/punk.

I distinctly remember in high school going to Taste of Chaos with Silverstein and As I Lay Dying, and the vocalist of Silverstein was like "Come on guys! This is a HARDCORE show!". After that I was telling my friends to check out these hardcore bands like AILD and Zao, then I started listening to Comeback Kid I guess. Highschoolers will be deluded, it's not up to us to show them the light, but it is up to us to provide a nest of dry grass and kindling that they can then proverbially light up with a spark of proper youthful anger/angst/st.anger.
As for BKohl, I don't think anyone here would do more against him than maybe avoid talking to him at a show? Come to shows, don't be a prick.
Hey Mike, that new Batman game is going to be better than Counterstrike. Fight me.
